First things first, I am aware of the possibility that not everybody who reads these posts are Christians. I do want these tips to be shared to non-Christians too though. I originally created this Substack with the hopes that it would help people see God in their life. Non-christians were a big part of my hopes that this Substack would help reach. Maybe God can use these posts on how to create a testimony to help non-Christians view their life in a more biblical way. Who knows? God can use these posts to reach whomever he chooses.
Something I think is important to keep in mind when it comes to creating your testimony is that your testimony is about more than just how you became a Christian (if you are one). It’s also about what has been going on in your life before and after that moment. What was life like for you before you became a Christian? What changed about you once you became a Christian? What made you decide to become a Christian? In what ways has God been working in your life? Why are still a Christian? Are you not a Christian? What are ways that you wish your life would change? Do you see the possibility of God being the only one who can create that change? Ask yourself as many questions as you like. Just keep in mind that a person’s testimony is more than just how a person becomes a Christian.
This is one thing I think makes some people think that they have a boring testimony. It seems like a lot of people think of their testimony only as the story of how they came to Christ. In all reality, your testimony is about your walk with Christ as a whole. Maybe adding those parts of a testimony won’t make a person stop thinking that they have a boring testimony. Maybe it will. It will at least help them be able to explain how their life is different from other people’s at least.
I feel like my testimony is a great example of this. If I was to simply mention how I became a Christian, my testimony might sound boring to some people. I decided that I wanted God to be a part of my life during a VBS. That might sound boring to some people, am I wrong? Here’s the interesting thing about it though. People have never thought of my testimony as boring. Why is that? It’s because I add what my life was like before and after I was a Christian. Broadly speaking, my life before I became a Christian was sometimes pretty unstable. My life after I became a Christian has been full of trials. When I look back, they not only make my testimony interesting. Looking back can also help me realize and/or remember ways that God was in my life that people, including myself, may not have seen.
That’s another one of the cool things I like about testimonies. Creating your testimony will not only have the possibility of helping others; it also has the ability to help yourself. Testimonies are a gift from God that can change everybody’s lives and, according to my experience, testimonies are one of the most powerful ways to change people’s lives… including your own.
If you are not a Christian, I would still suggest trying to write out a testimony. It may help you see God in your life in ways that you never thought you would’ve seen Him.
